Complex decongestive therapy (CDT)

The lymphatic system runs throughout the entire body, similar to the vascular system. It is responsible for transporting fluid, proteins and larger substances away from the tissues. An injury, illness or surgery can impair lymphatic drainage, resulting in swelling known as lymphoedema.

According to current guidelines, complex decongestive therapy (CDT) according to Földi is the standard treatment for lymphoedema. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated in medical studies, and it can significantly reduce the oedema.

CDT includes:

Manual lymphatic drainage
Skin care
Compression using bandages or compression garments
Exercise therapy
Self-management

Effective lymphoedema treatment generally follows a two-phase concept consisting of an intensive phase and a maintenance phase. During the intensive phase, the oedema is reduced with the help of bandages and manual lymphatic drainage.

During the maintenance phase, self-management plays an important role. Progress can be stabilised and further improved through regular use of compression garments, daily exercise and careful skin care.
